KUTh looks into Fiji, Vanuatu and PNG

Sydney, Australia:  KUTh Energy is an Australian power company that PITIC has been assisting with their move to invest into the Pacific Islands.

KUTh has energy projects slated for Vanuatu, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.

KUTh Energy uses a modern, green power generating method known as Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) which, at its most simple, means drilling down into the hot ground, piping down water then using the heated water that comes back up to create electricity. The water is recycled over and over and no carbon is released into the atmosphere.

This simple but clever way of creating cheap and clean energy is big news for the Pacific because it actually works better in the Islands than in the company’s homeland. The Australian continent is very old and very stable, so KUTh has to drill down to depths of up to 5km (close to the limit of drilling technology today.) This reduces the overall efficiency of the power generation while at the same time greatly increasing the set up and maintenance costs. The Pacific Islands are newer land masses, with very hot ground closer to the surface. Drilling therefore doesn’t have to be so deep meaning faster, cheaper access to clean energy.

KUTh’s speciality is energy production, and therefore invests their time and resources in that direction. The fostering of Pacific Island networks and matchmaking is PITIC's specialisation, and therefore KUth approached us for assistance. With our help KUTh has now made some great partnerships that are very promising for the future. We are very excited to be working with KUTh in their efforts to bring EGS into the Pacific Islands for a number of reasons. Firstly, the electricity will be much more affordable for the local populations to buy than what is currently on offer. Also, the environmental impact is far less, especially when compared to the commonly used diesel power plants. Additionally, the entire project brings employment and the new skills to the region, which inevitably leads to a stronger economy and the improved way of life that is PITIC’s main goal.

David McDonald, KUTh Energy’s managing director, said, “We see our future projects in the South Pacific as great news for the people who live there. The systems we use to generate affordable electricity are sustainable, environmentally sound and emit no gasses.”

When asked why KUTh is looking at investing into the Pacific Mr McDonald said, “Apart from the obvious geological benefits of working in some of the Pacific Islands, it is quite clear to us that the region is becoming more and more investor friendly, with improved infrastructure and private enterprise regulations."
